Solar home systems (SHS) are stand-alone photovoltaic systems that offer a cost-effective mode of supplying amenity power for lighting and appliances to remote off-grid households. In rural areas, that are not connected to the grid, SHS can be used to meet a household's energy demand fulfilling basic electric needs.

Mini-grids are local electrical networks (sized between 10 kW and 10 MW), powered by one or several generation sources such as photovoltaic panels, diesel generators and storage that can provide electricity 24/7 to multiple customers usually at a village size at a competitive price.

Cookstoves are commonly called “improved” if they are more efficient, emit less emissions or are safer than the traditional cook stoves or three-stone-fires. The term usually refers to stoves which are burning firewood, charcoal, agriculture residues or dung.
